Trading for Salt

Salt, its an essential mineral that many people around the world have taken for granted; except in North Africa. Here, the discovery of salt has helped to build empires and provide a way of life for the many different groups of people who dwell in the desert. In this on line activity, students will explore the development and importance of the salt trade. Students will utilize what they have learned from watching the video, Episode 2: A Desert Odessy (AFRICA) from National Geographic and reading the article Africa's Salt Trade from the textbook Geography:A World and Its People by National Geographic to create a project on North Africa and the salt trade.

Aim of the Project:

Students will create a journal, complete a map activity, and a third assignment of choice exploring what it would be like if they were journey into the desert with a camel caravan in search of salt, like Adam from the video.
